Music is more than notes and rhythms; it’s connection, honesty, care.
It’s beauty and vulnerability and feelings and colours and shapes and memories wrapped in melody and breath.
I’ve been writing, recording, and releasing original music since 2003. I’ve worked with so many people over the years, most of them gorgeous souls I’m now lucky enough to call friends.
But in business, especially this business, you sometimes cross paths with people who don’t share your values, who don’t care about you or the things you pour your heart into. I’ve only met a handful like that in more than two decades. And only two of them I’d cross the road to avoid sharing the same pavement with.
One of them I might not even piss on if they were on fire.
I’m joking…
Of course I’d piss on them. :-)
The point is: I’ve experienced what it’s like to be taken for granted, disrespected, chewed up, spat out, and left bruised by the music industry to the point where I’d had enough.
In 2024, I won Best Music Video for Cold Eyes. That cracked open something new in me, a doorway into a world I hadn’t fully considered.
Film-making.
My partner Bex and I headed off to a swanky awards ceremony at the prestigious Worcester Film Festival, and not only did we win, but we met a room full of genuinely lovely, encouraging humans. I caught the filmmaking bug hard.
And I was ready to hang up my guitar.
I’d accepted that my career was a five-album run. I hadn’t reached the level I’d hoped for, but I’d done a lot, and I was grateful. So stepping into a new chapter felt right. I applied to return to university. Media Production and Filmmaking in my hometown of Bristol.
I first went to Perth College waaaay back in 1994… then suddenly became a dad (no idea how that happened). I had to leave to work, so I never finished my degree.
Here I was, decades later, with a chance to return.
There’s something a bit magical that happens when you finally let go, when you stop gripping the wheel so tightly and let the universe, or God, or Stephen Fry, or whoever drives your cosmic taxi, take you where you need to go.
So I fully accepted that music was something I’d done… and filmmaking was what I’d do next.
And then… as well as being offered an unconditional place at university, I was offered a record deal.
Beautiful, right?
Not just any deal, from the most exciting new label around. And I’m their first signing.
Little Wing Records.
People I already liked. People I trusted. People I felt aligned and at ease with.
Little Wing is an ethical record label.
But what does that mean?
And why have I stepped away from platforms and partnerships that don’t align with my values, our values?
Because we want to create something we’ll still be proud of in 20 or 30 years.
An ethical label puts people first, the artists, the team, the fans.
It values:
Fair treatment and respect for everyone involved
Transparent contracts that protect artists’ rights
Creative freedom, the space to experiment and grow
Sustainability and social responsibility
Humanity woven through the whole process
Little Wing embodies all of this.
It’s a place where music and humanity can actually thrive together.
Why I Walked Away from Spotify
Platforms like Spotify have their place. They help people discover music.
But for me, ethics and care matter more than reach.
If I was going to do this, I wanted to work with people that:
Respects artists’ rights and earnings
Values human relationships over algorithms
Supports music that touches hearts, not just charts
Walking away from Spotify wasn’t a dramatic gesture; it was a conscious, grounded choice. A step toward making music on my own terms, where honesty and kindness lead the way.
Choosing Kindness in Every Collaboration
Kindness and respect are now non-negotiable for me.
If someone shows a lack of care, empathy, or integrity, I walk away.
I used to offer endless second chances. Not anymore.
Music should be a space of connection, not compromise.
Being part of Little Wing lets me create without fear, with people who genuinely want to see artists grow, thrive, and be treated well.
What This Means for You, the Listener
Every song, every video, every release is made for humans, not algorithms.
When you support my music through Little Wing, you’re supporting:
Artists being treated fairly
A community built on respect and care and music made with love, my heart, our hearts, for your heart.
With love
